GIDRM kick-starts suitability modelling in Vietnam

After successfully introducing suitability mapping in Leyte and Cebu provinces, Philippines, the SECO funded Mekong Urban Flood Resilience and Drainage Program is now partnering with the GIDRM to apply suitability modelling in Vietnam. In May 2017, the GIDRM team completed a mission to initiate the process of suitability modelling in the cities of Cam Mau, Rach Gia and Long Xuyen in the three adjacent provinces of Ca Mau, Ang Giang and Kien Giang, Vietnam.

The suitability mapping methodology has been developed in Leyte, Philippines, following Typhoon Haiyan. At that time, it was realized that traditional hazard maps mostly focus on the scientific parameters used in categorizing natural hazards but do not translate them in the economic categories used in planning and budgeting processes to support risk-informed political decision-making.

In addition to the Philippines and Vietnam, the BMUB financed Risk-Based National Adaptation Plan Program is currently looking into the potential application of the suitability mapping methodology in a pilot region in Thailand.
