GIDRM promotes coherence at AMCDRR

July 3rd – 5th 2018, Ulaanbaatar – The Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction took place in the capital city of Mongolia with over 3,500 attendees from over 50 countries. The conference concluded, calling for greater accountability for disaster losses in Asia, and issued the Ulaanbaatar Declaration.

GIDRM attended the conference to highlight the importance of fostering practical coherence in a world of global agendas in order to achieve resilience. The relevance of this linkage between coherence and resilience is reflected in the Ulaanbaatar Declaration, which mentions the general relevance of coherence (3rd clause) as well as a “call on all governments and stakeholders to commit to translating coherence of global frameworks into policy and practice” (9th clause).

Next to many interesting technical sessions and side events, a Market Place in the City Centre, at Sukhbaatar Square, attracted many conference delegates as well as Mongolian nationals interested in DRM. GIDRM presented its work at the Central Market Place with a booth full of information materials and lively discussions on DRM. Furthermore, we presented our progress and work on Hotel Resilient at the Ignite Stage, in the center of the market place.

Last but certainly not least, GIDRM launched the Coherence Practice Group. In a separate evening event, attended by about 60 invited guests of honorable delegates and important partners in the region, the Coherence Practice Group was introduced. The evening commenced with an endorsement by UNISDR, followed by a brief outline of the GIDRM Project and the concept of the Coherence Practice Group and concluded with a panel discussion. The Coherence Practice Group was created to inspire, capacitate and connect stakeholders within Asia/Pacific.

This need for more coherence was mirrored by the Ulaanbaatar Declaration and therefore concludes a very successful attendance by the GIDRM Team at the Asian Ministerial Conference on DRR.
